A fast-paced, well-written thriller

This novel’s compelling characters, clash of cultures, unpredictable plot twists, and strong writing kept me eagerly turning the pages to the end. Rosenberg does a masterful job telling the story of Ivan, a Russian hit man anxious to finish one last job before he can retire from the business. Though I’m not a big fan of thrillers, nor do I usually sympathize with hit men, I found myself rooting for Ivan throughout his travails. This novel presents an interesting and often humorous clash of cultures between homophobic Ivan and flamboyant Foxy, creating a dynamic that ultimately leads to a theme of tolerance and understanding woven throughout its violent twists and turns. This book is not for the faint of heart; it includes graphic, well-written descriptions of violence and sexual perversion, which at times are disturbing to read. Though humor is infused throughout the book, it is ultimately a tragedy, complete with a “Russian” ending. For those who can handle the content, this book is an excellent read.

A First Rate Thriller

A violent story with abundant scenes of violence and out-of-the-mainstream sex. These scenes, however, aren’t gratuitous, but necessary elements that develop the characters and move the plot along. If this story of Ivan, a Russian hit man, struggling to understand American and Latino culture as he pursues his assigned target from Russia to the US is Rosenberg’s debut as a novelist, it is an impressive work. The story can be unsettling at times, but Rosenberg’s writing carries the plot forward, enticing the reader on. For me, Rosenberg’s greatest achievement in this novel is Ivan, a complex man we come to understand as he pursues his target, vowing that this will be his final job. A first-rate thriller.

I found this to be a violent, gruesome story. It wasn't my cup of tea but this is my least preferred genre. At least this one did flow fast enough and the author does a good job mixing in international crime themes and voices (Russia, USA, Mexico).

Raconteur at work

To best appreciate “New York City Is Closed”, you need to realize its author, Art Stone, is a raconteur. He delights in telling stories. He loves fine wine, the best food, beautiful women, the world’s premier restaurants, and its grandest hotels. All these tastes flow into his writings, his settings, his characters, and his prose. This stunning page turner grabs your attention and your senses from the prologue through the conclusion 222 pages later. Stone has crafted an unusual terrorist story, unusual because of the motives of the terrorist leader and the book’s emphasis on him. The image of that villain, Gregory Eden, will stay with you long after you finish the novel. Stone is a personal, long-time friend of mine, and I see much of him and his personality in this novel. Readers will enjoy meeting him through his writing as much as I enjoy his company on Long Island.

A great read from beginning to end with a very relevant scenario for our times. The characters were developed well. Looking forward to a sequel to follow the continuation of the two main characters. An exciting adventure that takes you for a ride to foreign lands but ends right here in the most exciting city in the world. Definitely worth the read.

Just the thing for slipping into a cozy, grand old house in the English countryside for an afternoon. Not only that, we also get a Kathryn Reiss mystery with an actual murder.

Our heroine is the engaging Juliana—with a new job to master, a “new” grandfather to get to know, a supportive boyfriend and, apparently, someone out to kill her. With Juliana’s clever deducing, the reader is led through the maze laid by a murderous mind. Goose bumps will tingle before you’re finished.

About the Author
Frank Atchley is a retired police officer. He served twelve years as a homicide investigator before becoming an investigative sergeant for the Green River serial murder investigation in King County, Washington. Although the total number of victims cannot be accurately determined, in his jurisdiction, 48 women were murdered, the largest number of victims attributable to a serial killer in U.S. history. Atchley is very proud to have served on that task force whose members worked 24/7/365 to solve those murders. He retired at the rank of captain. He and his wife now reside in Henderson, Nevada.

A suspenseful read

I read mostly nonfiction, but a friend told me about this book and talked me into reading it. I admit I was hooked from the first sentence. The author did a good job of building the story step-by-step, the satanic cult was a good angle, and the story never goes off point with details that don't relate. It seemed like just when Riggs and his partner were about to solve the case, something happened to throw a wrench in the works, which kept pulling me through the story. I had a hard time putting this book down because I couldn't wait to get to the end.

Excelente libro, muy adictivo, me encanto la narrativa desde el ángulo de cada protagonista sin repetir diálogos. Me encantaría poder escuchar un álbum de Fart Farm aunque es fácil suponer quienes serían los ideales para una adaptación a la pantalla. Ya quiero leer el siguiente volumen.

A Cacophony of Violence

This is just wild. Good old-fashioned pulp madness. Jacky is a thug who wants his car back and will do anything to make that happen. Period. But the stuff he goes through to get it back, well...that's the rub. Not to mention the price of recovery.

It's a nasty little book with a gushy heart. Love it.

Now that was a fun read

The Fury of Blacky Jaguar is a pulpy romp through some very bad parts of the Bronx. What surprised me, in such a short span, was how much I liked the characters here. Blacky Jaguar is larger than life - think Jack Reacher without the scruples. You never know what he'll do, which makes him so much fun to read about. Special Agent Linda Chen is almost as much fun. She shares a past with Blacky, a past I hope to see more of in the future. Their chemistry is electric, a classic love/hate relationship. The villains are equally well drawn and the action is pretty much non stop. It's a quick, white-knuckled read. I suspect Angel Colon had as much fun writing it as I had reading it. Well worth your time. My only complaint - I wish it was twice as long.

That's what you get for messing with a guy's car.

Sometimes you encounter a character fully formed, right from the start. That's Angel Luis Colon's Blacky Jaguar. Blacky hits the page like the Tasmanian Devil with a pompadour and black leather jacket. Our man Blacky is an ex-IRA thug living the quiet(er) life... until someone runs off with his prized 1959 Plymouth Fury. Then, it's all bets are off as Blacky leaves a path of destruction across the Bronx in his quest to find his prized automobile. Who's named Polly. Of course. How Colon manages to pack such amazing characterization and pure heart amid mass destruction and violence all within the confines of 98 pages is a mystery to me. What isn't a mystery, is me waiting for more Blacky Jaguar.

This book is a mixture of Military and Police Procedural.

Louise Marshall is the Colonel's lady and as such as certain duties and obligations. Even though she socializes, she has no real friends. Moving into a new home, she discovers the journal of a previous woman of the house. It is what happens after she begins reading the words that becomes the heart and soul of this story. Are these words powerful enough to change Louise from within?

To me the story is great because you see the battle of good and evil played out before your eyes. The reader is swept along wondering what will happen next. I love that there are more than one viewpoint seen through the story.

Couldn't Put It Down

This book was so good, I read it in 24hrs. I couldn't put it down! I love the story line. I don't want to write much because I don't want to give away any spoilers. This novel is a thriller, crime, suspense, detective, horror and even some paranormal. It's really easy to follow all the plot points. It's just a truly enjoyable book. There are some grammar and sentence structure mistakes, which usually leads to me taking away a star in the review. However, the story is so well thought out and delivered, so captivating, that I can't bear to give it anything but 5 stars. I WILL definitely read more from the author.

A dark, psychological saga that delves into the minds and lives of two women, who seem to share more than just the house they lived inside. Mobsters, Dames, Murder, & Mysterious Books

If you like classic hardboiled detective fiction with mobsters, beautiful dames, nightclubs, murder, and Fistfights, you will find no better detective series than Dewey's Mac series. Between 1947 and 1970, Dewey published sixteen books in this series and every single one of them is top-notch. Draw the Curtain Close is the first book in the series and it took Dewey six years to return to the series and give us a second one.

Draw The Curtain is tough and hardboiled. It features a world where there's little sunlight and there's all kinds of nefarious double crossing characters and crooked entanglements. Like mid classic Private eyes, Mac works by himself and has one pal on the police force, Donovan. The story is a typical tangle of double crossing crooks and, in typical classic PI fashion, leaves the reader in the dark as to what everyone's after till nearly the end.

What really works about this book is the nonstop pace that never lets up. If you've read lots of PI fiction, you've read other stories with the mobster asking the PI to work for him, the mobster's dazzling dame who has to be hidden from both the mob and the law, the frame up, and the chases through the town, but few can tell this story better than Dewey. This is simply the good stuff.

I'd been kicking around ideas for the perfect cozy cat mystery when I stumbled upon a non-fiction book, a pamphlet almost, about the life of Edgar Allan Poe's tortoiseshell cat. Little is known about Cattarina, including how she and Mr. Poe met, but through letters and historical documents, enough information survives to give us a hazy picture. It seems the tortie had a fondness for sitting atop her companion's shoulder as he wrote. To say she did not serve, as least in part, as his muse would be an effrontery to anyone who's ever been owned by a cat. 
I must confess, I have never lived under the same roof as a tortoiseshell. But my grandmother cared for such a cat--Pyewacket. The scratches she delivered to my seven-year-old ankles and arms may have disappeared, but the memory of her tortitude lives on.

About the Author
Monica Shaughnessy has a flair for creating characters and plots larger than her home state of Texas. Most notably, she's the author of the Cattarina Mysteries, a cozy mystery series starring Edgar Allan Poe's real-life cat companion. Ms. Shaughnessy has nine books in print, including two young adult suspense novels, a middle grade superhero novel, an Easter picture book, two cozy mysteries, and numerous short stories. Customers have praised her work time and again, calling it "unique and creative," "fresh and original," and "very well written." If you're looking for something outside the mainstream, you'll find it in her prose. When she's not slaying adverbs and tightening plots, she's walking her rescue dogs, goofing around with her family, or going back to the grocery store for the hundredth time because she forgot milk.

Excellent addition to Cattarina's mysteries!

I must admit, I'm a bit disappointed to see that this is the last 'Cattarina' story. I've thoroughly enjoyed these books, and would have happily bought more. I always felt like I was there right beside Cattarina (I love the spelling of her name) as she helped Edgar and Sissy solve the mystery. I'm glad I discovered these books. They were definitely good reads!

Best of the Three

I believe this is the best mystery of the series. Ms. Shaughnessy has captured not only the main character, the cat, Cattarina, but, also, the other members of the Poe household. They pop off the page as they try to solve the mystery of what happened to Francis. Eddy's periodic manic madness, Sissy's illness, and Muddy's (Edgar's mother-in-law) worked-induced worry make you feel what it is like in a house with a chronically ill patient.

Once again our main character, Cattarina, has been pulled into a mystery. In order to help Eddy with his writings as a muse and help Sissy overcome her symptoms, Cattarina is once again roaming the streets of Philadelphia in hopes of catching a law-breaker, this time, a kidnapper. She enlists the help of new friends and old.

Those who love historical mysteries, cats, and Edgar Allan Poe will enjoy this mystery. It is well-written, humorous, and contains all the elements of an excellent mystery. Historical accuracy is woven into the story in a way that we enjoy learning about Victorian era with feeling the trappings of a too tight Victorian corset.

I highly recommend.

Travis Higgins is indeed a troubled man...Post Traumatic Stress mixed in with a heavy mix of OCD. Tonight he has a plan to rid himself of the voices in his head. Calling 911 he gives the operator the exact location where he will commit the crime.

A nice twist at the end of this one...

Short, but Packs a Punch

This little story is intense, well-written, and captivating. I've read it a couple times and I liked it the second time around as much as the first. Olah is able to tell a great story!

Amazing

It's about time! Finally, someone has given me a story. I really appreciated how this author balanced her storyline with fashion, hip hop, and sex. this story was not filled with one meaningless sex scene after another. It was an adventure that kept me wanting to read more. Then, just when I thought things were settling, the adventure was on again. I did find the two male characters to be left as a bit of a mystery. However, the author did leave me wanting more. I am a fan!

I just got finished reading this series, and all could say is wow. I couldn't tell if Jarlath was supposed to be good or bad. Bailey he was something else. I can't wait sleeping in sin:with a stranger

Stacey Burns makes one, almost fatal mistake when she endeavours to reinvent herself to escape her seedy, King's Cross past. She enlists the help of Auckland private detectives to find out who is blackmailing her. What follows is a short, sharp, rollicking ride of half-truths and shady gangsta types that PI Dan (slightly chauvenistic) Crowley, his delightfully sane wife, Molly and side kick, Mike (sexpot) Manning have to navigate to get to the truth. Fast paced plot with a real strength in characterisation of major and minor characters. I enjoyed McLean's earlier novellas: 'Honey 'Trap', Sleeping Dogs', 'Tangled Web' and 'Old Friends' and was not disappointed with this latest work. I have got to know the key characters, their foibles, their humour and the way they go about their PI business. It is always interesting to see the 'underbelly' of Auckland and in 'Dirty 'Deeds' I was amused to learn that the trendy, laid back suburb of Titirangi is actually a hotbed of gangsta homelife. If you are after a neatly tied together plot, action and 'real' people, I recommend these stories. Start with the first one, though and see how McLean builds on their world while staying faithful to the characters.
