I'd been kicking around ideas for the perfect cozy cat mystery when I stumbled upon a non-fiction book, a pamphlet almost, about the life of Edgar Allan Poe's tortoiseshell cat. Little is known about Cattarina, including how she and Mr. Poe met, but through letters and historical documents, enough information survives to give us a hazy picture. It seems the tortie had a fondness for sitting atop her companion's shoulder as he wrote. To say she did not serve, as least in part, as his muse would be an effrontery to anyone who's ever been owned by a cat.
I must confess, I have never lived under the same roof as a tortoiseshell. But my grandmother cared for such a cat--Pyewacket. The scratches she delivered to my seven-year-old ankles and arms may have disappeared, but the memory of her tortitude lives on.
About the Author
Monica Shaughnessy has a flair for creating characters and plots larger than her home state of Texas. Most notably, she's the author of the Cattarina Mysteries, a cozy mystery series starring Edgar Allan Poe's real-life cat companion. Ms. Shaughnessy has nine books in print, including two young adult suspense novels, a middle grade superhero novel, an Easter picture book, two cozy mysteries, and numerous short stories. Customers have praised her work time and again, calling it "unique and creative," "fresh and original," and "very well written." If you're looking for something outside the mainstream, you'll find it in her prose. When she's not slaying adverbs and tightening plots, she's walking her rescue dogs, goofing around with her family, or going back to the grocery store for the hundredth time because she forgot milk.

Excellent addition to Cattarina's mysteries!

I must admit, I'm a bit disappointed to see that this is the last 'Cattarina' story. I've thoroughly enjoyed these books, and would have happily bought more. I always felt like I was there right beside Cattarina (I love the spelling of her name) as she helped Edgar and Sissy solve the mystery. I'm glad I discovered these books. They were definitely good reads!

Best of the Three

I believe this is the best mystery of the series. Ms. Shaughnessy has captured not only the main character, the cat, Cattarina, but, also, the other members of the Poe household. They pop off the page as they try to solve the mystery of what happened to Francis. Eddy's periodic manic madness, Sissy's illness, and Muddy's (Edgar's mother-in-law) worked-induced worry make you feel what it is like in a house with a chronically ill patient.
Once again our main character, Cattarina, has been pulled into a mystery. In order to help Eddy with his writings as a muse and help Sissy overcome her symptoms, Cattarina is once again roaming the streets of Philadelphia in hopes of catching a law-breaker, this time, a kidnapper. She enlists the help of new friends and old.
Those who love historical mysteries, cats, and Edgar Allan Poe will enjoy this mystery. It is well-written, humorous, and contains all the elements of an excellent mystery. Historical accuracy is woven into the story in a way that we enjoy learning about Victorian era with feeling the trappings of a too tight Victorian corset.
I highly recommend.
