Cool take on well known characters

Jet is one of my favorite series and I was curious to see how other creators would handle it. I must say that this was a nice read. A totally new take on action from the world of Spec Ops with the introduction of hybrids. Looking forward to read more

Fun read!

I'm a Twilight fan and a Jet fan, so when I heard there was a story where Jet is involved with vampires, I had to check it out. I really enjoyed this take on the series, and look forward to reading more about the hybrids.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review. Highly recommend.

you feel like you really know each character as a family member

Here is a novel that you wish wouldn't end. When you finish reading it, you feel like you really know each character as a family member. The content is filled with all kinds of adversities. I love how the writer draws you in. She really knows how to build a good, entertaining southern tale. I really hope there will be another novel in the making. I would enjoy traveling through Libby's life from 1930 until today. Pick this one up as you won't be sorry or feel you wasted your time!!!

I enjoyed this book immensely and was sad when it came to an end. Jill Peters really captured the essence of Southern life which was exemplified by the setting and characters. In too many books, the dialogue between characters is so unrealistic, but in The Cane Patch, it felt authentic. I fell in love with many of the characters, especially the main character, Libby, and her next door neighbor, Mrs. Knight. I hope the author is writing a sequel because I would like to see where Libby's life takes her next. I'll be watching for Peters' next book!

A refreshing new author!

More than Dead is a refreshing murder mystery that doesn't follow the template for the current mass-produced genre. The author's thoughtful and knowledgeable approach relies on good facts and insights. Law enforcement officials are viewed as real people with emotions, showing dedication, and sensitivity, and without resorting to gratuitous violence. The central character, Luke Hudson, exhibits grit, determination, skill, and even a romantic side of him emerges. This is a very good read; I found it difficult to put the book down, even at midnight when my eyelids were drooping! Thankfully, the author is working on a second Luke Hudson mystery.

A Thoughtful Police Procedural

"More Than Dead" is a thoughtful novel involving the investigation of two crimes. The central figure is an investigator, Luke Hudson, who has transferred from a large city to a smaller northern California community. He carries some baggage with him (injury to leg and divorce due to commitment to work, and not relationship). This novel is actually two separate stories rolled into one novel with Hudson and his police associate as the link. One story (the most intriguing one) involves the death of a horse trainer at a race track. The second story, interwoven into the first, is about the search for a serial killer who victimizes young women.
It is obvious that this author has done good research as the investigative details are accurate. The hands of victims get bagged and the general public is not allowed under the police tape and everyone who comes and goes through tape is documented. That sort of detail is refreshing in a time when TV and formula novels violate these principles. Also,the details regarding the world of horse racing add a newness to this work. This is a world that the general public has little experience and knows little about. So we get a glimpse into this industry.
Investigator Hudson is a justice-centered guy who is trying to get a case or two solved despite interference from the Chief of Police who is part of the local 'good old boy' network and is afraid of scandal. Hudson is a likable character with a bit of complexity and vulnerability which makes you think about him in a deeper way. There is also a workplace romantic angle which will probably please some readers, although it is not something that drives the plot forward for me.
The author has a nice flow regarding dialogue and the sentence structure is sharp and concise.
I would recommend this novel for those of you who enjoy a well-written police procedural that is a bit different than your average crime book.

This Turned Out To Be A Favorite Mystery Novel For Me.

More Than Dead - was a superbly clever crime novel. I found myself emotionally invested with the characters and pulled into the world of our main character - Detective Luke Hudson. With the murder in the Horse Stable through the intense investigation that goes on when Hudson and his partner open a cold case involving the disappearance of a little girl, I was fascinated.
The skill of S.Resler has produced a smart, moving and believable story that is evident as the novel breezes by rapidly. I was shown how horrific crimes can have such a huge impact on everyone involved, families, communities and law enforcement. Detective Hudson touched my heart with his involvement and deep commitment to solving each case and I have to say More Than Dead is one of those novels that keeps you reading and wanting more.

Should Simon retire?

I've read every volume in this series and found them very enjoyable, but this most recent doesn't meet the standards set by the earlier adventures. Just a bit too far-fetched with reunions in the middle of the Afghan/Northwest Frontier border area in the midst of a major uprising and other coincidences. While the reminder of the essential problems of hoping to ever have a central government in Afghanistan because of the tribalism are timely from a present-day perspective, I think Simon (as he reminds us again and again) and the series are starting to show their age. Yes, this is the grown-up version of a boy's story. So what? It's exciting and fun to read, while reminding us that the other side has a point. They want to be left alone from outside domination; that these are the ancestors of the very people we are fighting today, is a point on which to make us pause.

Great story telling, lots of action and intrigue and terrific characters. The period, about the Second Afghan War, and locations of the story, Khyber Pass and the Northwest Frontier, combine to make a wonderful recreational read you don't want to put down and hope that there will be sequels!

Awesome read!

The character development grabs you right from the beginning and sucks you in until you can't put this book down. The author clearly has a handle on law enforcement and shares an inside view of the trials and tribulations that can come with the job. I look forward to further books by Mr. James.

Sometimes Dirt Gets on You in LIfe.....

Scott James has named his first novel "Dirt: A Crime Novel". In reality, this is a novel not just of crimes local to 1970s Oregon, but also the crimes of a distant war and the damage they did to those who served, "each a sin of a different kind."

Those who returned from Viet Nam left behind the figurative fog of war only to deal with the literal fog of the Willamette Valley in Oregon. Police officers trying to protect their populace, they instead find themselves dealing with the revenge rampage of an ex-soldier over an act of war that had been as necessary as it had been wrong.

“Vietnam is no moral and just cause like World War Two. It’s a politician’s mess, where right and wrong aren’t real clear... Who knows what that boy of yours has seen or done... Whatever he’s done, he did it over there and he may have brought some of it back with him. Sometimes dirt gets on you in life and it’s hard to wash off.”

The book is gripping and fast-paced, swinging back and forth among the parallel story lines.

My only objection to the book was that the main female characters seemed to serve only as prizes or punishments for the male characters. They were less fully developed, and their ultimate fate defined the main male character's fate.

The one thing that bothered me about this otherwise engrossing story was how the main female characters were portrayed. To me they existed simplistically, as both prize and penalty for the main male characters.

Dirt is extremely fast paced, perhaps because that is how the author, a nationally-ranked triathlete and former police officer, lives his life.

I needed a long hot shower with lots of soap after reading Scott James' first novel, Dirt!

Written in true investigative style, the sentences are short but the words and feelings are long.

I was drawn in by each characters compelling story and true to life it wasn't the story they were telling that you had to watch out for.

Written by a sixteen year police veteran raised by an officer father whos career began in the Oregon setting in the 1970's felt gritty but good!

Scott James knows his topic, he knows the lay of the land, the people and the dirt; because, trust me, you haven't been dirty until you've had your shoes sucked off by a muddy Oregon feildl!

So, break out a fresh bar of soap and give Dirt a ride-along.

Way to write, Scott James, looking forward to the next one.

Walking by Night

The fifth book about Detective Inspector Joe Plantagenet.

A young girl on her way home from the pub stumbles over a dead body, but when the police get to the scene of crime the body is gone. She also claims that she was watched by someone that looked like a nun, but the police don't believe her story since she was quite drunk. But Joe Plantagenet feels that the girl may be telling the truth, and then a body is found.

I was very happy to be approved for the latest book in the Joe Plantagenet series. I have never read a book in the series before, but I have read a book in her Wesley Peterson series and I loved that book. So, I was looking forward to reading this book very much. I liked Joe Plantagenet, he was an interesting character and the fact that he was supposed to have become a priest instead of a cop (Just like Hathaway in Lewis the TV-series) was intriguing. The story was interesting. I kind of narrowed it down to a couple of suspects towards the end, but I didn't figure out exact who the killer was before it was revealed.

I liked this book very much and I have owned​ the first book in this series and I'm looking forward to reading that one!

Foggy British mystery

Walking By Night has proven to be just what I needed, a break from heavier things with a British procedural, set in a foggy Yorkshire town full of history and unexplained death. I haven't read any of the books of this series before but that did not seem to interfere with understanding the characters or the essentials of their histories. I find that I have read a couple of books in another of Ellis' series and have others on my tbr and would definitely read more of this Joe Plantagenet series.

The mystery itself is complex from the start with multiple leads, multiple directions of inquiry. And the narrative itself follows more than one character's voice. I enjoyed the chase, not allowing myself to become too worried about red herrings. Instead, I simply read on---wondering who, in the end was responsible. Enjoyable--except for the victims.

It's hard to believe that Walking by Night is already the fifth book with detective inspector Joe Plantagenet at the helm. Every instalment is as fresh, exciting and invigorating as the first. In Walking by Night a drunk teenager finds a body, but when the cops check it out, the body is nowhere to be found.

Cue Plantagenet to be the only one that believes her story. He is vindicated when a woman is reported missing and so the drama unfolds. Is life imitating art? The very dark themes of religion and sexual violence are woven in a theatre production The Devils and somehow, Plantagenet finds, the missing woman is part of it.

Not to mention a clairvoyant: Did he know what would happen? Exactly how clairvoyant is he?!

Walking by Night is like watching the fifth movie of a franchise: You know the characters well enough to understand their motivations and behaviour, but the story is never predictable.

May we see and hear more from Ellis and Joe.

What We Salvage

At first I was put off by the author's style. It is rather singular and takes the front seat in a way I found distracting and undermining an actual narrative. Style is often the new focus at the detriment of just effectively telling a story I find. And this seemed the case at first.

However a bit into the book and I found the style settled into the actual telling of the story. Baillie makes sure to take his distinctive style and make it the voice of the story itself. Use it to define some nicely crafted characters that enable some plot points that might otherwise be a bit too contrived.

I did find that the effort to convey the atmosphere a bit heavy handed. The violence bordered at times to be gratuitous and the effort to create tension with the threat by the 'villains' seemed almost a bit much. All or nothing in the evil area as it were.

But I still found it had a nice pace and the lead characters interesting enough to carry me to the end.

Growing Up Clockwork Orange

This seems to be a stand alone novel.

This is a memoiresque coming of age story set in the 1970s-80s punk scene of Hamilton, Ontario and beyond. It is gripping and raw as it vividly details growing up rough on the streets in the music scene and drug culture. Tragic and compelling, it is almot impossible to stop before the end because you just HAVE to know what becomes of these characters.

***This book is suitable for adult readers who like a little anarchy and mayhem in their historical fiction memoiresque coming of age epics with a dash or two of tragic love :)

Another great Harry Strong story. I really got pissed at him this time, though. He really messed up. I love the way he solves whatever task he's given but he certainly screws up his personal life.

This book was great. You laugh. You cry. You want to commit murder. It has a bit of everything. You find love but because he is not the correct race its wrong or illegal. Why because you love someone of a different race haven't we moved passed that. Will he get to her in time? Will they finally be together? Will his brother come to the rescue?

An entertaining and captivating thriller on Indian intelligence agencies

The latest entry in my kindle library is the very aptly named "Operation Chaos". The start is literally mind-blowing (with the word literally here used in the correct sense and not just for emphasis). It starts with complete chaos for the nation's intelligence agency and then slowly reveals the potential solutions. This is a multi-layered plot with almost half a dozen main characters at several locations in India ranging from the Thar desert to the Bay of Bengal.

Although the initial focus of the story is on the ruthlessly efficient commander of the Black Cats, David D'costa, other characters pop up at various stages with more interesting viewpoints and storylines. One of the most interesting part is the backstory of the nation's President, who is not just a helpless head of state in need of protection as is the case with most other novels in this genre. The President here is one of the major characters and is more than just the president of the nation under threat and I hoped more chapters were devoted to his backstory.

Most of the landmarks mentioned in the story are described vividly which shows the research that went into writing the story. The references to ancient scriptures and Sanskrit shlokas adds to the mystery. This is part treasure hunt, part espionage drama and part military action, with the crests and troughs of different tracks almost parallel.

The best part about this story is that all the characters are completely developed. Any conflict can be fully appreciated when you know the thoughts from both sides. While the protagonist's point-of-view is the norm, seeing the action from the antagonist's perspective adds a new dimension to the story. And this story does that multiple times. In fact, the writer devotes a few chapters in the later half of the book completely to the primary antagonist.

It's difficult to give a more detailed review without giving away major spoilers because there are twists and turns at almost every chapter. Go ahead and give this a read. The length of the novel is short enough to finish this over a weekend. Strongly recommended for mystery and suspense lovers.

A Mystery from India

HR has written a modern mystery and during the story telling he incorporated India beliefs and actions. The last part of the novel discusses the different steps in Hindu beliefs. The action is above par but the elements of discussion makes this an excellent and very informative read.....ER

A fast paced action thriller from India

From movies like National Treasure to the Dan Brown novels, a prolonged hunt for historical treasures hidden in plain sight has been a theme that has captivated many story writers. Never before Operation Chaos, however, has such a hunt been played out against the rich historical backdrop of India.
Rasam weaves a tale with multiple parallel subplots that seamlessly come together and diverge again, a la Dan Brown, to form a rich and complex story that never once slows down for the reader to catch a breath. Follow the exploits of a criminal mastermind on a treasure hunt as he toys with the upper echelons of India's government, while holding the rest of the country hostage. Will he successfully execute his plans? Or will India's best once again defend the country? Read along as Rasam orchestrates his characters in a cat and mouse chase, interspersed with tidbits of information about India's history and religion.
All in all, a very impressive debut! I will be looking out for more works by Rasam.

I Really Wish The Description Would Have Been Fulfilled

A Blind Eye: Book 1 in the Adam Kaminski Mystery is a work with many positives. The blurb really got my attention and I was so interested in reading it, I started right away. The Polish landscape and frequent historical references add greater depth; as well as better developing the main characters. I am seldom negative in any of my reviews because it is such hard work and a labor of love to create a book. Yet, this time I have to. The plodding pace is quite distracting. I kept hoping for something to happen in maybe the next chapter or next, but the writer would just go back over the same ho-hum. I did enjoy the Poland aspect, it gave a sense on being with Adam, Sylvia, and Lucasve [sp]. On a scale of 1 to 5, I would generously rate it with a generous 2. I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.

Surprisingly Good Mystery from a NTMA, Book 1

Adam Kaminski, a Philly police detective, is one of several sent to Poland to promote friendly goodwill between the US and Poland. He is tasked with representing his department while learning how Poland and her government conduct governmental policies and affairs, in comparison to how the US and the 'double' state of Philadelphia conduct theirs.Being of Polish descent, he was hoping to meet up with relatives living in Poland.

He did meet a cousin whose daughter's death was being ruled a suicide by the Police and whose own attempted murders were being ignored by the authorities. Adam was at first unwillingly drawn into helping his cousin Lucasz, who is a journalist, investigate and find the who and why of her death and his cousin's several dangerous mishaps. Also, with the help of the Polish liaison Sylvia, Adam was able to go places and talk to people as he tries to help in the investigation.

I really liked that by following Adam, I also learned how the government functions, that corruption is rampant there as in almost every country. (Ditto with drug dealings and how money can buy people and power, and politics and politicians can be dirty despite their original honest, altruistic intentions.) The author painted, for me anyway, a good picture of Poland and her people which is not dissimilar to my country of birth. I also enjoyed the relationships among the participants of the goodwill trip, the growing trust between Adam and Lucasz and Adam and Sylvia and the danger Adam was facing because of his helping Lucasz. Although there were several suspects, I was glad to know that I was correct in guessing why and who the perpetrator was.

Please do not hesitate to get this book, it will not be a waste of your time. I will be recommending this to friends and family members who enjoy reading a good mystery! I will also be interested in reading the rest of the series since I have discovered a good NTMA in Jane Gorman!

Thought-provoking Look at a City of Contrasts

A Blind Eye is a fitting title for a book that states at one point that "... more was hidden than seen in Warsaw ..." Besides being an intriguing mystery, it is a thought-provoking look at a city of contrasts, i.e., the juxtaposition of giant skyscrapers against a makeshift market set up under a tin roof. One of the most compelling scenes in the book takes place in that market. Gorman does a good job of portraying Poland as a country torn between celebrating their history, remembering those who died, and moving forward. The meeting of long-lost relatives adds an extra dimension, bringing a human touch to what could have been just another story of government corruption. I look forward to more books from this author.
