Marshall's Family, by Anson Welsh

Love, war, terror, family drama and high adventure, when a man has to show a courage he never knew he possessed.

Richard Marshall is a pilot working for a large, international mining company in Africa. He is a quiet, rather self-contained man who yearns for a stress free domestic life. What he has is a wife who despises him and a lover who gently pressures him to start a new life with her. When his daughter brings home a boyfriend who he instantly likes, but his wife regards as being completely unsuitable, the family atmosphere becomes even more intolerable.

However, all these problems are eclipsed when a violent military coup rocks the country.

Marshall is caught up in the fighting, and narrowly escapes with his life when he falls into the hands of Major Kinga, soon to become head of the new government's secret police.

Though not a brave person, Marshall becomes increasingly involved in activities that pit him against the military regime and Major Kinga. Tension mounts steadily as he takes on ever greater responsibilities while exposing himself to the very real risk of being caught. Eventually the fate of thousands of people rests upon both his willingness to put his own life on the line as never before and his skill as a pilot.

Riveting, Exciting and in Parts Shocking!
By Yvonne Lee
Marshall lives in an African country somewhere...no specific place is ever mentioned. He's a pilot, a job he loves and is more than good at. His family however, particularly his wife Fiona give him nothing but grief. Nevertheless, life goes along comfortably enough, until the day a coup takes pace and a nightmare of murder and mayhem ensues.
A despot from the South of the country ousts the present government, and proceeds to torture, persecute and murder all who come from the North of the country. Eventually, Marshall gets caught up in the horror of it all, and is forced to find a way of rescuing his family and a number of others who need his help.
To say this is an exciting story, is an understatement. I was on the edge of where ever I sat to read the book. I got so involved, I found myself trembling with a mixture of concern, fear and anticipation. It is so well written, so descriptive, it felt like I was watching a film. One of those, where you shout with frustration at the hero...come on MOVE! before it's too late!
The characters are brilliantly fleshed out. I cared about those I was meant to, and disliked...hated others. The dialog is brilliant and the story flows, grabbing you pretty much from the first page.
If I have one negative thing to say about this book, it's the frequent use of expletives. I don't like it, and I never will. When an author writes as brilliantly as, Anson Welsh, it shouldn't be necessary.
Anyway, gripe over, this is a great book and one I whole heartedly recommend.

First book by a great new author
By Joanna
This very visual, action-packed thriller would translate well as a film. It is full of heart-lurching moments and had me gripped from start to finish. The escalating ethnic tension that is the background - and then the foreground - to the book seems extremely real, as does the wilful blindness of the expat community. Marshall's character also comes over as powerfully real - his heroism and skill as a pilot contrast in a true-to-life way with his resigned submission to his wife, and his vacillations about risking his own and his close family's safety for people he hardly knows are entirely convincing. I liked the description of the dogs that follow the bloodthirsty mob, knowing from experience that they'll be rewarded with fresh meat . . !

In short, a brilliant book and I hope he writes another one soon.

Another Top-notch Thriller!
By Judicious
Best weekend read I've had in years! I've been following this author's work for a while now, and I have the say, he's yet to disappoint. The book blends solid action with character development, and with no shortage of humour peppered throughout. Personally, I loved the character Fin, funniest guy in the book. 5/5 Will be reccomending!

Who can you trust?
By Twostory
That's what kept me interested as this 50's era spy story unraveled. A new team leader of a secret American undercover agency has to decide just who's on his side and who's working for the Russians. Plenty of action and very interesting people keep the pace moving. Some humor here and there too. Nicely done.

I Let out a breath and replied, "You know how it is: some days you're the pigeon...And some days you're the statue."
By Don Kidwell
Clean (no foul language) tho grisly spy book reminding me some of an older James Bond thriller what with their 'gadget' guys, and I did like it for the humorous passages such as "Together, we could work to make this crazy world a better and safer place. If it didn't kill us first" and "I considered checking his heart, but I wasn't entirely sure he had one." Quick, entertaining book that did leave me curious enough that I would be interested in reading more from this author!

Intriguing murder mystery - worth the read!
By Data Geek
This is a well thought out novel, easy to read but not simple to figure out who the culprit is. The character development is well done and the plot unravels at the perfect pace. As the novel progresses, we find out more and more details about many of the characters, which brings added suspicion with each new piece of information that is revealed. There are a number of plot twists that keep the novel interesting and the reader unable to determine who the killer is. It is very well written. I read it in from start to finish because it was too good to put down.

Endearing Mini Police chief
By Carol Balawyder
It’s been many decades since I worked on a ski patrol team and so reading Descent brought me vicariously back to those days, giving me a fresh look at the administrative and security aspect of running a ski resort. It was also fascinating to learn about the ins and outs of the ruthlessness of coaches and their high caliber skiers in their attempts for a spot in the Olympics.
Reading Descent was like skiing downhill with its twists and turns and mogul bumps along the way. It’s also the kind of mystery you want to curl up and read undisturbed, perhaps next to a fireplace, although I read it during a heat wave and could feel the chill of the ski resort and the icy personalities of some of the characters. The author does an excellent job in creating the ski resort atmosphere.
Descent is filled with more than a handful of well drawn characters and their intriguing relationships with each other. The main character, Kalin Thompson, is the kind of character you’d like to have as a best friend. She is feisty and her insecurity in her new post as mini police chief is endearing.
Besides being a well crafted mystery Descent deals with the complexities of romance and the dynamics of domestic life making it a well rounded read.
In some ways it reminded of a classic whodunit in the Agatha Christie fashion with its plot twists that kept me guessing till the end as to figuring out whodunit.
