Amber in quality
By James N Simpson
Suspended police detective Harry Kyle is asked by a friend to visit his greiving wife in rural Wales who is living at her father's house and refuses to come home. He was killed in a car accident but she believes strongly it was murder since he was colourblind and has been afraid to drive since hitting a pedestrian.
Kyle originally believes it was just a car accident as the traffic light has only green and red and with no amber their was no way her father could have known the difference but decides to humour her and investigate in the hope she will return to her husband. Some facts he uncovers do not make sense and he becomes really suspicious when he is hit over the head while examining the wreckage.
I have read better novels by Ormerod such as Dead Ringer which manage to keep you interested the entire book. This book although a good read is quite boring in parts and drags on at times. If you've never read one of his novels his style and characters are very similar to Donald E. Westlake or the British authors such as James Pattinson, Gerald Hammond and Christopher Nicole.

Awesome design for children's book
By Christopher Siemasko
The design of this book is hot. It teaches children about the color red through minimalist 60's paintings. The whole book is clever.

SAVAGE WINTER IS HERE ... The Curt Savage Mysteries are part detective and part conspiracy. The cases could be ripped from the today's headlines

The stakes are raised as the conspiracy revolving around the abduction of Amy Weissman explodes in unexpected directions. Savage and his cohorts strategize on locating the monster responsible for the heinous crime, but the rekindling of a liaison opens up an opportunity for Savage to do some investigating of his own. Exciting, Suspenseful, Intense!!!
By Gwen Stevens
Music superstar Crayton Lowell has died. While police ruled his overdose accidental, his sister Dakota suspects foul play. Curt Savage is hired to discover the truth, and with billions of dollars at stake, there’s a lot riding on the outcome of his investigation. Savage digs in, peering behind the glitz and glamour of the music biz. What he finds is the scummy underbelly where deals are struck and lives are ruined. Along the way, we learn all the tricks and meet all the tricksters who offer Savage this advice: “The Devil lives here … and what he manufactures is an illusion … covered by lies.”

This is SAVAGE WINTER, the third in the Curt Savage Mysteries and the best one yet. Exciting, suspenseful, intriguing, this book is cleverly-written and entertaining. I was completely blown away by the plot and characters. It’s totally original and unlike anything I’ve read before. This series has me hooked!

The City of Angels is the perfect backdrop for this tale of greed and wanton desire. The locale gives Savage the opportunity to reconnect with Sophia, and things quickly heat up. The scenes with her are smokin’ hot with just the right amount of sizzle. The Amy Weissman investigation is still on Savage’s mind, and the twists in that case are mindboggling! That’s all I’m gonna say! Oh, except you will never guess what happens! Never! Our favorite conspiracy theorist Blanchard is on the hand offering his brand of crazy as more clues about Ruth Warwick’s murder emerge. What Savage finds is disturbing, but not as disturbing as a warning from Dr. Shadows. “You’re trusting the wrong person again, and it’s going to cost you dearly.”

Truth? Fact? Fantasy? It’s up to Savage to find out. The writing is taut and the action doesn’t stop. This story doesn’t twist as much as writhe, so be prepared to hang on for dear life. The characters introduced are complex and so believable that I found myself wanting to hug a few—and slap many others. There’s so much packed into these pages, but the storyline … it speeds to a climax that will knock your socks off! I did not see that coming … did not!

My recommendation is to download this series ... and we’re talking immediately. If you love mysteries, treat yourself to this suspense-filled thriller!!! Five stars to this superb outing from Ruth Bainbridge! Lord, this woman can write!

Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship (German: Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre) is the second novel by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, published in 1795–96. The eponymous hero undergoes a journey of self-realization. The story centers upon Wilhelm's attempt to escape what he views as the empty life of a bourgeois businessman. After a failed romance with the theater, Wilhelm commits himself to the mysterious Tower Society. The novel has had a significant impact on European literature. Romantic critic and theorist Friedrich Schlegel judged it to be of comparable importance for its age as the French Revolution and the philosophy of Johann Gottlieb Fichte. Arthur Schopenhauer cited Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship as one of the four greatest novels ever written. Schopenhauer also mentions the book in his Aphorismen zur Lebensweisheit. Arguing against chasing transient pleasures, Schopenhauer says, "Where we were looking for pleasure, happiness and joy, we often find instruction, insight and knowledge, a lasting and real benefit in place of a fleeting one. This idea runs like a bass-note through Goethe's Wilhelm Meister; for this is an intellectual novel and is of a higher order than the rest."

More than a bit of a slog, but many small rewards along the way
By J. Keyser
Ben Jonson, observing that certain actors credited his rival, Shakespeare, with never blotting out a word of his writing, retorted "Would he had blotted out a thousand!" Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, from a modern perspective, would benefit from easily ten times that many deletions.
Clearly this is not a novel for current tastes, and prolixity is only one of its barriers to contemporary readership. Another is its somnambulistic pacing. Scenes run on interminably, fleshed out in more detail than even a patient reader could want. In most of those scenes, there is a single event and paragraphs of exposition on some character's--usually Wilhelm's--emotional reaction to it.
In the midst of the story there is a novella-length digression entitled Confessions of a Fair Saint. It completely derails the flow of the story in order to allow an irritating, sanctimonius female character to natter on ad nauseum about her relgiosity. The significant content of the Fair Saint to the main story could have been mercifully condensed to a single page, since, thereafter, she is only mentioned once, and that in passing, perhaps a hundred pages later!
The main story is written from a third person limited perspective, so that we generally see no more deeply into the book's other characters than the none-too-discerning Wilhelm sees. The other characters--and there are more than 20 of them--are reduced to one-dimensional ciphers.
Wilhelm himself is the arch adolescent--a randy dilettante, falling in and out of love with every character in a skirt while launching, then abandoning, one career after another.
Though the novel is certainly no comedy, the plot borders on farce. Wilhelm, mid-story, suddenly finds that he is being recruited into a small coterie of minor-league Übermenschen who have been secretly following his stumbling progress through the world--why and how never being adequately explained. Characters appear, disappear and reappear with a frequency that would only be plausible if Germany were the size of Key West. To crown the absurdity, every character in the novel who hasn't conveniently died by the last chapter is lumped into an all's-well-that-ends-well conclusion that beggars belief.
That conclusion leaves Wilhelm wealthy, betrothed to the girl of his dreams, and blessed with the sort of social connections that make self-definition a real possibility, at once underscoring and undermining what would seem to have been Goethe's central thesis--that the key distinction between the 18th Century aristocrat and the burgher--the commoner of attainments--was neither wealth nor power, but the nobleman's freedom to define himself without hindrance: "he is entitled to press forward, whereas nothing more beseems the burgher than the quiet feeling of the limits that are drawn around him. The burgher may not ask himself `What art thou?' He can only ask `What hast thou? What discernment, knowledge, talent, wealth?"
The burgher can only enjoy an approximation of that self-creation by going on the stage, where he may play a king or noble and thereby acquire, at least for the moment, the privilege of defining himself as they do. "On the boards a polished man appears in his splendor with personal accomplishments ... and there I shall have it in my power to be and seem as well as anywhere." This thought-provoking foreshadowing of the celebrity intoxication of our own age would have been a perfect climax for the story, but appears--alas!--at just about its midpoint.
Given all the exasperations Wilhelm Meister poses for the modern reader, why do I rate it at four stars? Because it is a major work by one of the Western world's greatest minds, filled with brilliant aphorisms about the human condition. Its style, so quaint and formal to modern readers, its plotting, so implausible by today's standard, befit its era, which is long gone. So, too, are the world-altering events of that era, among them the French and American Revolutions and the ideas that spawned them. A world was coming of age, and this first Bildungsroman, this prototype coming-of-age novel, was perhaps the most important literary evocation of that new world.
Wilhelm Meister is not for the reader seeking only entertainment, and Goethe never intended it to be, even for the readers of his far more intellectual age. As Wilhelm muses at one point, "The rude man is content if he sees but something going on; the man of more refinement must be made to feel; the man entirely refined, desires to reflect."
