'Cooper is able to express his unique visionary creation, not in just word play, but he gives it a sense of reality that makes you understand, or become a part of those characters, as if they are real.The best way I can describe Cooper's writing is a splash of Chuck Palahniuk, mixed with Kurt Vonnegut and a whole new realm of truly original reality that only Cooper has in creating his world, personas and his personal reality on page.

The character of BOY creates an excitement inside my book loving reality, and in away BOY makes me think of one of my favorite characters of all time, Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye. The character of BOY has that ability to be remembered as a unique, one of a kind character. That is what makes this book stand out above and beyond a lot of books.

From the Author
Writing this book took a lot out of me. I began in 2013, writing by hand and finishing in the fall of that year. The terrifying nature of the book forced me to put it away for a while, in the proverbial desk drawer that Stephen King and others have made so famous. After a long bout of silence, I decided to examine the book again in its entirety at the start of 2015.One thing is safe to say -- the work still sends a shiver down my spine, but not as much for the ghosts or the various entities Boy encounters within the dark pages. No, it was the pacing of the book, its ups and downs, that made me feel as if I were going insane, both in the parts of the writing process and the subsequent read-through. BOY versus SELF is part horror, part psychological thriller; a work filled with artistic concepts and references watered down by the pages of time and years lost to mental decay. It is a book that gives new meaning to the title as the story unfolds, the work which I am most proud of and most frightened by.

Disturbed and Talented

A totally new direction from Harmon and just as well written and engrossing as the other stories he has released.
A trip outside and inside a disturbed and talented boys mind as he ages, travels and achieves "success".
I believe there also may be a trace of autobiography here. He definitely nailed Austin. Looking forward to his next effort.

I read many different kinds of books so when I got Harmon Cooper's books I had to try them, and I was very glad I did. Boy versus Self is his best so far. I have not been disappointed with any of them -so if you want something good and different you should try Boy versus Self, and remember the name Harmon Cooper. I have a feeling you will see more of him.

Slight Departure, but Still in the Twilight Zone

I was recently introduced to Cooper's works and I have enjoyed the ride thus far. It is mostly 'out there' and this book fits into the category pretty well. Although it is quite different from the Life is a Beautiful Thing series, Boy versus Self still explores the strange. To call this book a paranormal tale wouldn't do it justice.

Boy. Girl. Mom. Friend. Although they don't have equal billing, they tend to be the most important characters; at least for Boy. The other primary characters have names, but many are fleeting, or at least, build upon the whole of Boy and his journey. I will say, I immediately thought of George Takei as the super-rich lover of art. If you choose to read, I think you may agree.

Boy lives a [censor]-up life: Artist. Uncertainty. Fragmented. Courageous. Fearful. Ghosts. Demon.

I liked Boy and Friend. Friend is an easy-going doper and pill-pusher with a golden heart. The bond between the two provide some foundation through the chaos. Glass Wings is a trip and the variety of ghosts; with or without sexual interactions, are all unique.

IF YOU HAVEN'T READ: I don't feel this contains SPOILERS, but proceed with caution.

This is a stand-alone book, and has an anti-conclusion. There are hints to sway, but upon concluding the read, I thought “Did the top fall?” Yes, a reference to the maddening conclusion of “Inception.” I raced to finish the book to see what was reality, but at the end you will have to choose. This drives me nuts in too many ways. I strongly considered knocking off a star, but the end isn't swift or loose. Cooper leaves it to you, by design. I just happen to [censor] hate that.

I received an advance copy for review. This one is a longer book and I'm taking a break from the 'out there', philosophical, strange existentialism and reading a short book geared toward kids. I'll jump back in the ring after I decompress a bit.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I highly recommend that you read this book! I loved it, and here is why:
I love a good read, and this is a gripping story.
I love historical fiction.
I love learning stuff, and this book is rich with information about ancient Mayan religious beliefs and practices as well as about Guatemala, its people, and its history. The author writes accurately and authoritatively about all that based on his personal experiences in Guatemala.
I love people who care, and the author is using proceeds from the book to “… benefit human rights organizations currently operating in Guatemala.” Classy move.

An Excellent Read

Lorenzo's Rules is an excellent murder mystery with a wealth of interesting facts about Guatemalan culture, both recent and past. Lorenzo Batz is a "modern" Mayan with the detective skills of a Sherlock Holmes. He is a humble, compassionate and courageous representative of the local elders in a remote mountainous village. With the aid of the local police chief, he must traverse a political mine field in the quest for justice. Should they fail, the consequences for the community will be severe. While the novel is fictional with respect to the characters and events, it accurately describes some of the horrendous persecution suffered by the indigenous people of the region. Besides providing education and entertainment sales of this book will benefit human rights organizations operating in Guatemala.

A great novel full of suspense!

Although this is a book of fiction, the author's background and experience living in Guatemala provided him with a deep insight and knowledge of the people of Guatemala, ancient Mayan rituals and local customs which he used in this book. He did a great job of creating and describing the characters and his writing kept my attention throughout to the point of not wanting to put the book down. This is a must read if you like a book full of suspense and interested in learning more about the country and people from this area of Guatemala. I can't wait for future "Lorenzo's Rules" novels!

Good book

The first story that continued the story of the Werewolf body guard was confusing. In the last story it left off where the bodyguard got caught in a bombing at the front gate and was taken to the hospital. They thought he was going to lose his sight. But in the next book it didn't tell what happened about his recovery, instead the two main characters were suddenly engaged and he was alright. Very confusing!

About the Author
Liz Lipperman started writing many years ago, even before she retired from the medical profession. Wasting many years thinking she was a romance writer but always having to deal with the pesky villains who kept popping up in all her stories, she finally gave up and decided since she read mysteries and obviously wrote them, why fight it? She now calls what she writes Romantic Mystery (RM) since there is always a little romance involved. This was the best Clueless Cook Mystery!!!

Loretta Moseley is back and she wants her column Kitchen Kupboard too. Jordan McAllister can’t believe she might lose the column and be back to just writing the personals. Even though Loretta’s uncle owns the Ranchero Globe newspaper, he is going to give each of the ladies a chance to write the column. For the next few weeks, while the Italian Festival is in town, each lady will write one column a week about all the activities and wonderful food at the festival. When the festival ends a decision will be made.

In addition to worrying about her job, Jordan will be meeting her boyfriend Alex’s mother. That is enough to make you sweat. Thanks to Alex’s sister Kate, they are all invited to the IAF party being held in the Presidential Suite at the swanky Crown Royale Hotel. Things are going great until Kate’s boyfriend Marco shows up with his fiancé Tina Calabrese. Kate runs out and her mother slaps the supposed boyfriend. While dancing a little later, Jordan and Alex hear a woman screaming. They go to the railing and look down to see the dead body of Marco Petrone. Jordan had better be careful investigating the murder. She could just end up with cement shoes!

Things to Ponder: Will Jordan still have a job after the festival leaves town? Where was Tina when Marco took his nosedive off the balcony? Why did Emilio supply Kate with a lawyer?

Like a fine wine, this series just keeps getting better with each addition to the series. I think that this is the best one yet. I love the eclectic group of friends that are always ready to help Jordan out. This was a real page – turner. The author has included some mouth-watering recipes. So if you like your mystery Italian style, then you should be reading Chicken Caccia-Killer.

This series just gets better and better!!!

Chicken Caccia-killer is the fourth installment in the Jordan McAllister/Clueless Cook mystery series by Liz Lipperman. As in the previous books, Jordan, a journalist currently writing the culinary column and looking for a sports reporter spot, is tasked with a special assignment. This time, however, Jordan not only ends up having to solve a mystery but she has direct competition for her current position as culinary reporter. To top it all off, one of the organizers of the Italian Festival that she’s assigned to cover is her current beau’s sister and it’s time for Jordan to ‘meet the family’.
In her usual sassy style, Liz Lipperman has written yet another wonderfully captivating book that keeps the reader guessing “what will Jordan get herself into next?”. The Clueless Cook mystery series gets better with each book and “Chicken Caccia-killer” is the best yet! Thanks for another delicious “dish”, Liz! Can’t wait for the next one!

as she vies for her job as Kitchen Kupboard writer. Along the way, we're treated to mystery and mayhem as only Liz Lipperman can create. It's a good read and I recommend it on these cold, winter nights.
